先日、夏期清掃を行いました。西願寺では 檀家と共に聖地を綺麗にするのです。先月は 尼講・詠讃会と共に草引きをしました。明後日には 仏具の磨き物もあります。お盆（ご先祖様のお迎え）に向けて、少しづつ掃除をしていくのが当山の風習です。
都会の方ですと「面倒くさいなぁ～」、「寺の者がすればいいじゃないか？」と思われるんじゃないでしょうか（笑）。しかし、西願寺に軸足を置き始めて「なるほど、先人の智慧は素晴らしいなぁ … 」と感心する毎日です。もちろん住職を始め、寺内の者もコツコツと掃除をしています。潤沢な資金があり、住職が経営者として任されてるのならば、業者にお願いするかもしれません。しかし このような行為が続くと言うことは、歴代の住職と檀家が ” 布施の精神 ” でお寺を護ってきた” 念（おも）い ” が詰まっています。現代のように、何でもお金で解決する考えはスマートですが、長い目で見たらマイナスの面が多いのではないでしょうか。昔に比べたら 飛躍的に生活水準が上がってるに、我々は 不平不満ばかり出てきますよね。いつまでも満足することはありません。だったら功徳を積んだ方が絶対にいい。心と体で奉仕する体験が 充実した毎日を送る礎になるのです。公の精神を磨くことが、私的な幸せに繋がると確信します。

１９８０年代頃まで、日本の社会は「公が大事」という認識を多くの国民が共有していたように思う。私はちょうどその頃に社会人になったが、例えば道端で弱い者いじめをしている子供がいれば、コラッ！と怒鳴る大人がいたものだ。ダメなことはダメなんだ、ならぬことはならぬ、公に反することをしてはいけないという共通認識があった。人間もちろん自分が大事である。今が大事だし、お金もとても大事だ。しかし、自分よりも他人の方が大事なときもある、今よりも未来の方がもっと大事、お金よりも大切なものがある。それが“人間の尊厳”であると思う。他の誰よりも自分が大事、どんな未来のことよりも今が大事、お金よりも大事なものはない、そのような考え方の中にいては、人間としての尊厳は著しく損なわれていくだろう。今だけ、自分だけ、お金だけという思想が、どれだけ現在のこの地球をダメにしてきたか。なぜ社会が劣化してきたのか？それは“人間の尊厳”を失った日本人が増えてきたからである。（『なぜ世界は日本化するのか』 育鵬社）
インディアンは、常に７世代先の子孫のことを考えて自然と共に暮らしていたそうです。アメリカ先住民の古老の言葉に 「自分自身のことでも、自分の世代のことでもなく、来るべき世代の、私たちの孫や、まだ生まれてもいない大地からやってくる新しい生命に思いをはせる」とあります。 今、私達が生きているこの世界は、未来の私達の子孫も生きていくかけがえのない世界です。そうまでして、まだ見ぬ子孫、そして地球、つまり「公」を大切にしていたのです。自分さえ良ければいいという考え方では、だんだん孤独になります。長い目で見ると、公を大切にしている人ほど多くの人に喜ばれ、人もお金も集まっているのではないでしょうか。仏教と同時に、その考え方も 未来につないでいきたいと思っています。合掌
